Meeting tonight with Supervisor Avalos addressing Safety Concerns / 7pm @ Ward Recreation Center

Hello Neighbors – not strictly a Ridge Lane concern, but we are sharing this message and meeting announcement from Supervisor Avalos regarding OMI Safety due to its importance for all of us:

***

Dear Neighbors,

I am deeply troubled by the recent homicide of a young neighborhood resident on the corner of Plymouth and Broad Streets in the early evening of October 7, 2016, only hours before our planned painting day for a new mural in the OMI, celebrating community heroes and history.

As Supervisor for District 11, I have been working for years to bring youth programming, public safety, and neighborhood beautification services to the area. Yesterday, I spent over an hour talking to local businesses, passersby, and young adults hanging out on the corner about the homicide. All who I talked with really cared about the neighborhood and were troubled by the event and wanted a safer neighborhood.

I also noticed that different people wanted different types of solutions. These ranged from increased public investment, greater outreach to youth for community programming and employment, and less heavy handed police activity. The residents and merchants I talked with did not know the names of the officers on patrol in the area and said that whoever did come were infrequent and untimely.  This is a concern for the entire community and my office. Overall, most community members constantly call for a more respectful and a more effective and consistent community-oriented police presence in the OMI.

Please join me this coming Wednesday, October 12, 2016, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the Minnie and Lovie Ward Recreation Center (650 Capitol at Montana) for a Public Meeting co-sponsored by Taraval Station Captain Denise Flaherty and my office for more information on the homicide and to participate in a community conversation about neighborhood concerns and plans to address the rise in neighborhood concerns after the death of a young man from the OMI neighborhood.

We will also discuss some of my recommendation on improved safety in the area, including:

1)   Reestablishing the Taraval Police Substation at Broad and Plymouth and developing a community oriented policing approach to the OMI focusing on building strong relationships with all parts of the community, including a commitment to fully staffing The Neighborhood Team, “The TNT”

2)   Ensuring strong job outreach to youth in the neighborhood, especially transitional age African American youth.

3)   Coordinating a neighborhood based safety plan with Office of Economic and Workforce Development, Office of Violence Prevention Services, Public Works, Recreation and Park Department, and the Department of Children, Youth and their Families.

If you are not able to join, but want more information about these efforts, please contact me at (415) 554-6975 or john.avalos@sfgov.org.

I hope to see you on Wednesday,

John
